Who We Are
Rotary began in Chicago, USA, on 23 February 1905, when four professionals from different walks of life came together to foster friendship and goodwill. What started as a fellowship organization soon evolved into a global movement dedicated to humanitarian service, guided by its enduring motto, "Service Above Self." Today, Rotary International unites more than 1.4 million members worldwide in a common commitment to creating lasting positive change.
Rotary's journey in India commenced on 1 January 1920 with the chartering of the Rotary Club of Calcutta, the first Rotary club in mainland Asia. From Calcutta, Rotary expanded steadily across eastern and northeastern India, leading to the establishment of clubs throughout Bengal and the Northeastern region. To facilitate more effective administration and service, Rotary International bifurcated the erstwhile District 329 in 1989–90, creating District 324. Rtn. Ramesh Prasad Agarwalla served as its Charter District Governor in 1990–91. Subsequently, when Rotary International adopted a four-digit numbering system, District 324 became District 3240. Today, RID 3240 stretches across parts of Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Tripura, and Mizoram, embracing an extraordinary mosaic of cultures, languages, and traditions. Despite its diversity, the district remains united by fellowship, integrity, leadership, networking, and humanitarian service, making it one of Rotary's most vibrant and distinctive districts. This is the story of that remarkable journey.
